High School Basketball
Mt. Scott Learning Centers’ (MSLC) High School is again offering a basketball elective, as well as participation in the competitive Portland Alternative Schools Youth Basketball League. The 2009-10 school year marks the third year Mt. Scott has provided the twice-weekly afternoon basketball class and optional competitive league during the winter.
The basketball program is made possible through the generous support of Mt. Scott Community Center (5530 SE 72nd Avenue, Portland, OR 97206), which allows MSLC students and staff to use the center’s gymnasium throughout the year.
The basketball elective meets Mondays and Fridays from 2:00 - 3:15 p.m. at the center. Instruction focuses on fundamentals, conditioning and teamwork. Students are divided in groups based on experience and skill level for drills and scrimmages.
MSLC students earn weekly participation in the Alternative Schools Youth Basketball League based on behavioral and academic success during the school day, and attendance at required weekly practices (basketball elective). Head coach Joe Orzali and assistant coach Tim Hall make a final determination regarding the game roster at the end of each week.
The weekly game schedule runs through the end of February. All games are on Friday afternoons at the Pearl Court in downtown Portland. Other participating schools in the basketball league include Open Meadow, Helensview, Youth Employment Institute, Cascade, and Alpha.
