| Mt. Scott Learning Centers is teaming up with Portland Public Schools, Open Meadow Schools, and Camp Fire Columbia on a five-year grant initiative to boost high school graduation rates and improve students' post-secondary success.
Titled "Partnership For Graduation," this federal high school graduation initiative is designed to achieve the following three goals:
- Students needing additional supports in order to graduate from high school will be identified early using early warning indicators.
- Students identified as needing additional supports to graduate will be connected to appropriate preventative and re-entry supplementary services.
- Students engaged in supplementary services will graduate high school at increased rates.
At Mt. Scott, the grant is helping fund two new staff positions. These are our School Success Specialist (Joshua Mead) and Academic Support Specialist (Erin McCarthy).
These positions are designed to:
- address dropout prevention and school success through developing a comprehensive post-secondary transition program for students beginning middle school and continuing beyond high school graduation;
- generate a culture of school success and post-secondary planning that can be emphasized at all grade levels and in the school community;
- develop academic skills, essential skills and foster positive youth development;
- connect students to community involvement and mentorship opportunities;
- assist students to achieve grade promotion, credit retrieval opportunities, and access to academic support;
- promote family involvement whenever possible; and
- provide tracking and support for personal education plans across grade levels and in the application of individualized plans.
