, Counselor

contact: jconvy@mtscottlearningcenters.org

Julie is a licensed clinical social worker who began working with teens 13 years ago taking groups of girls on extensive backpacking trips. She quickly discovered that working with youth was her passion. She graduated from the University of Oregon with a bachelor's degree in Psychology and went on to pursue her master's degree in Social Work at St. Louis University with an emphasis in family therapy.

Julie gained experience with youth over the last 13 years in outdoor programs, working with runaway and homeless youth for four years. She performed her graduate practicum work in an inner city school in St. Louis, working for a family therapy agency, running groups for girls, boys, violence prevention, and sexual abuse groups. Julie has a passion for incorporating the wilderness into her therapy work.

Julie works from a strengths base perspective with a Narrative Therapy Approach. She is inspired by all the stories youth bring to the program and believes they have many amazing new stories to discover about themselves. She recognizes that change is a process and being patient through change can be very helpful to both student and counselor.

Julie has provided clinical supervision to Portland State University graduate students from Portland State University and Lewis and Clark College for the past two years and enjoys teaching and sharing her experience with the students in the counseling field.

Julie spends her free time hanging out with her three-year-old golden retriever, gardening, playing guitar (stuck on John Denver tunes), soaking up the outdoors, and laughing loud.
