Middle School Program (Grades 6-8)
The Mt. Scott Middle School program for students in grades 6-8 provides a dynamic educational alternative to the traditional middle school environment. Male and female
students work in gender-separated classrooms. Each class is limited to approximately 15 students, providing great opportunities for students to gain from the individual attention of their instructors.
Like the Freshman Academy, the grades 6-8 program places a major academic focus on literacy and language. Many classes weave reading and writing assignments into their curriculums. Additionally, Reading and Writing are separate Language Arts classes, allowing students to work intensively in both areas. Other classes work similarly to ready students for the academic rigor of high school while providing them the individual support needed for their achievement. In addition to Language Arts, other classes include Mathematics, Social Studies, Health and Wellness, Technology, General Science, and a course in Study Skills.
Community development is another important aspect of the Mt. Scott Middle School program. Students are encouraged to develop their interpersonal skills through positive community-building activities. Staff supervises peer interactions and help students build their conflict resolution skills. Various events throughout the week highlight student contributions to the safe and supportive environment at the school. Mt. Scott also partners with community organizations to provide creative and healthy activities designed to boost student achievement.
Academic progress for each student is tracked throughout the school year by academic advisors. These advisors help identify and resolve potential roadblocks to students’ academic achievement. Regular parent contact is a key component of each student’s academic plan. Every student’s respect, effort, and focus are also monitored during each class period to ensure the student is building the character skills needed for further scholastic success.
