Mt. Scott Learning Centers' partnership with PlayWrite, Inc. completed its seventh season this year with two successful two-week workshops. The fall workshop culminated with a final performance on November 2, and the winter session's finale was January 24. Both performances were held at Theater! Theatre! (3430 SE Belmont).
The workshops teamed a combined total of 14 Mt. Scott students with PlayWrite coaches in a carefully structured two-week residency where students meet both individually and in groups. The 2 ½ hour daily exercises utilized the tools, expertise and guidance of the PlayWrite coaches, while sparking the creativity and emotional depth of each student. The scripts are exclusively written by the students, with the coaches encouraging the creative process through reflection and revision.
The rousing, emotional and humorous pieces were the result of many long hours of hard work on the part of all participants. Upon reflection, students spoke highly of the workshop and felt more confident and empowered from this experience. The students’ personal connections with the coaches generated an in-depth writing experience, developed tools of the creative arts, and inspired pride in seeing their pieces performed on stage.
Mt. Scott student "PlayWrites" this year included: Esperanza Stewart, Alandra Jamison, Mahad Ali, James Rogers, Alex DeFrancisco, Amanda Owens, Mackenzie Snedden, Dee Dee Turner, Eddie Collicott, Cheyenne Ragan, Kobel Weaverli, Ariana Ruiz, Evan Cloud, and Andrew Lee.
