Mt. Scott Learning Centers’ high school was fortunate again this year to partner with the community theater program known as PlayWrite, Inc for two successful workshops and performances.
The program teams students with professional actors in a two-week playwriting workshop, culminating in a live performance of the student’s script by the actors. The two-week residency is a carefully structured process where students meet both individually and in groups. The 2 ½ hour daily exercises utilized the tools, expertise and guidance of the PlayWrite coaches, while sparking the creativity and emotional depth of each student. The scripts are exclusively written by the students, with the coaches encouraging the creative process through reflection and revision.
Mt. Scott was honored to be the site of PlayWrite’s first advanced workshop, which created pieces of musical theatre drawing on a collection of the original plays from last year's workshop graduates. The October 2-10 workshop ran October 2-10, culminating in a live performance of the work on November 2 at the school. More than 100 students, family and community members attended the final production.
PlayWrite also conducted its second two-week introductory workshop at Mt. Scott October 16-30 with 10 new students. Oregon Public Broadcasting was on hand to film four days of the workshop for Oregon Art Beat. The final performance was Tuesday, Oct. 31.
The rousing, emotional and humorous pieces were the result of weeks of hard work on the part of all participants. Upon reflection, students spoke highly of the workshop and felt more confident and empowered from this experience. The students’ personal connections with the coaches generated an in-depth writing experience, developed tools of the creative arts, and inspired pride in seeing their pieces performed on stage. This community partnership between Mt. Scott Learning Centers and PlayWrite, Inc. has clearly been one of the most positive collaborations in the history of the program.
