Middle School
Program
With the 2002-2003 school year, we launched an exciting new middle school program that separates the girls and boys. Research strongly
supports the benefits of this arrangement, especially for students
who are easily distracted and are wrestling with low self-esteem.
Our middle school boys and girls are finding it is much easier
to concentrate and less inhibiting to participate in class. They
are feeling more confident and trying things they never would have
in a mixed-gender setting.
Customized Course Work
All students are tested for math and reading performance at the
beginning of every year. We then customize their course work accordingly.
Counselors and social workers help students with anger management,
mediate problems with families and students, and provide case management
for families. They also address special needs such as transportation,
housing, counseling, and other obstacles thay may otherwise prevent students
from attending class. We also provide strong drug and alcohol counseling
and intervention when necessary.
Students work at individual levels and in small classes for social
studies, language arts, math, science, and health. Physical education
and social skills classes are whole-school activities. All sites
have computer technology facilities and computers are integral to
our curriculum and instructional methods. Students also participate in all required state testing.
Preparation for the Future
We emphasize the relationship of course work to future education
and employment goals, and actively help students envision and prepare
for their futures. Key to that preparation is helping students develop
the social and emotional skills necessary to work in groups, be
on task and on time, and respond appropriately to supervision.
