Mt. Scott, community groups team up
to create recreation space for students

Mt. Scott High School staff and students have long recognized the need for an outdoor recreation space. Fundraising efforts in 2007 helped finance the first phase of the project: a half-court basketball area for students and the surrounding community to use.

Phase two of the project continued in 2008 to improve the school's physical environment as well as the educational environment. A landscape architect donated formal plans for a green space on the south side of the school. The green space plan included garden beds (complete with a variety of recommended native plants and trees), a bike shelter, and walking paths. A partnership with Village Building Convergence and a grant from Hardy Plant Society helped launch the bike shelter construction and development of some of the landscaping areas. Additionally, a generous grant from the Joe's Foundation has funded an inground basketball hoop, as well as plants and trees, to be installed this spring.

In 2009, AmeriCorps members Lauren Senkyr (with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Restoration Center) and Carrie Jones (with Oregon Environmental Council) began organizing volunteers and donations in support of the outdoor recreation project. Lauren and Carrie's efforts were part of their Community Action Project leadership requirement through Northwest Service Academy.

A successful volunteer event on March 21 helped kick off the first of three "work parties" to complete the next phase of the outdoor recreation project. This included clearing out and preparing areas for the remaining landscape beds, improving and adding to the existing walking paths, reinforcing and enhancing the bike shelter, installing picnic tables and benches, and planting trees, shrubs and flowers.

The project culminated in late April when Rebuilding Together Portland, Cricket, Hands on Greater Portland, and several other organizations and individuals teamed up for what some called the "Mt. Scott Miracle Makeover." More than 150 volunteers descended on Mt. Scott over a two-week period to donate materials and power-wash, paint, build, landscape, plant, install and clean. The result was an amazing transformation of the school - both outside and inside.

The original goal of outdoor recreation project was to create a more inviting feel to the school, teach students skills in landscape design, and allow for future outdoor education and recreation opportunties. Through the generous donations and efforts of our school partners and volunteers, Mt. Scott is meeting that goal and continuing to build on it.
